Ashok Chavan submits his nomination from Maharashtra for the Rajya Sabha elections

On Thursday, Ashok Chavan, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and now a member of the BJP, officially submitted his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

This development transpired shortly after Chavan severed ties with the Congress party and embraced membership in the BJP fold.

It's worth noting that the Rajya Sabha elections, encompassing 56 seats across 15 states, are scheduled for February 27, with the deadline for filing nominations set on February 15.

Expressing gratitude towards the senior leadership of the BJP, Chavan conveyed his emotions, stating, "I cannot adequately express my feelings. Despite my recent entry into the party, the BJP has shown confidence in me, entrusting me with this significant responsibility."

He specifically acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and state BJP president Chandrakant Bawankule.

Chavan, who had dedicated four decades of his political career to the Congress, clarified that his decision to switch allegiances to the BJP was motivated by the pursuit of enhanced opportunities rather than any other factor.

Dispelling notions that the promise of a Rajya Sabha seat prompted his departure from the Congress, Chavan emphasized his track record of electoral success, particularly citing his repeated victories in the Bhokar assembly constituency.

Furthermore, Chavan recounted his defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from his stronghold of Nanded to his BJP adversary, highlighting the changing political dynamics within his traditional base.
