During a session in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attributed the turmoil in Sandeshkhali to the RSS, alleging that the BJP's focal point was a leader affiliated with the Trinamool Congress. She also affirmed her government's commitment to taking stringent measures against those implicated in the unrest.
Addressing the assembly, Banerjee asserted, "We are closely monitoring the situation in Sandeshkhali, ensuring that no individual involved in any form of misconduct escapes accountability. The target of BJP's agenda was a prominent Trinamool Congress figure, Shajahan Sheikh," she emphasized.
Emphasizing her unwavering stance against injustice, Banerjee stated, "I have never condoned nor will I ever tolerate injustice against anyone."
Banerjee detailed the measures undertaken by her administration in response to the Sandeshkhali situation, revealing, "We have deployed the state women's commission and constituted a dedicated police team for Sandeshkhali. To date, 17 individuals have been apprehended in connection with the unrest."
Furthermore, she highlighted the proactive approach adopted by her government, stating, "Our women's team is actively engaged on the ground, with the police team conducting door-to-door visits to solicit grievances. We are committed to addressing all reported issues promptly. However, I must be apprised of the specifics before initiating action."
Banerjee's remarks coincided with the walkout staged by BJP MLAs from the assembly, demanding her statement on the Sandeshkhali situation, a move initiated in her absence.
Responding to Banerjee's assertions, BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari interpreted her comments as validation of the RSS's influence. Adhikari further called for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to intervene and investigate the reports of sexual exploitation in Sandeshkhali.
Earlier in the week, six BJP MLAs, including Opposition Leader Suvendhu Adhikari, were suspended from the assembly due to their protests regarding the Sandeshkhali issue.
Amid ongoing protests in Sandeshkhali, lasting seven consecutive days, Banerjee's statement underscored the urgency of the situation, particularly in light of allegations implicating Shajahan Sheikh and his associates in land encroachment and sexual harassment. Sheikh has remained elusive since January 5, when a confrontation with Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers ensued during a raid at his residence regarding an alleged ration scam.
