A confrontation erupted between law enforcement officers and members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the unrest-stricken Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal on Tuesday, following heightened tensions during a demonstration denouncing the purported sexual harassment of women by leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.
The situation escalated as BJP supporters, mobilizing towards the Superintendent of Police office, reportedly breached barricades, resulting in a significant disturbance in the locality.
In response to the escalating tensions, police resorted to wielding lathi sticks to disperse the assembled crowd.
Reports indicate that numerous female supporters of the BJP sustained injuries amid the clashes, prompting law enforcement to employ tear gas in response to the protesters hurling stones at them.
Notably, authorities imposed Prohibitory orders in Basirhat, West Bengal, in anticipation of an agitation program proposed by the BJP.
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was enforced in the vicinity of the SP office in Basirhat from 6 am to 6 pm, aimed at upholding law and order. A substantial deployment of police personnel was evident in the area, to forestall any untoward incidents.
In Sandeshkhali, several women have been staging protests over the past few days, decrying alleged atrocities committed against them by TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his cohorts. These women have asserted that Sheikh and his associates unlawfully seized parcels of land and subjected them to sexual harassment in the region.
Similar unrest unfolded in Murshidabad, West Bengal, where clashes erupted between activists of the Left Front and law enforcement, leading to the deployment of lathi charges and tear gas. Reports suggest that police resorted to these measures after activists initiated stone-throwing.
The confrontation unfolded during a rally organized by the Left Front Farmers' Forum in the Baharampur area of Murshidabad. The rally, intended to advocate for various agricultural-related demands, encountered resistance from law enforcement. Consequently, Left activists breached police barricades, sparking a showdown with the authorities.
