Ashok Chavan, a seasoned Congress leader and the progeny of former Chief Minister SB Chavan, made headlines by officially joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, a day following his resignation from the Congress. In a notable move, Chavan refrained from citing specific reasons for his departure, emphasizing the independent nature of his decision-making process.
Chavan's defection marks the latest instance of a former Congress Chief Minister transitioning to the BJP, adding to a trend observed in recent years within India's political landscape. Renowned for his significant influence in the Nanded region of Maharashtra, Chavan has wielded considerable political clout throughout his career.
His tenure as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 2008 to November 2010 was marked by significant events, including his assumption of office in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Chavan's leadership spanned nearly two years before his resignation from the post.
Additionally, Chavan's political trajectory includes a stint as the President of the Maharashtra Congress unit from 2015 to 2019, along with multiple terms as a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Chavan's move to the BJP aligns with a broader trend observed among former Congress Chief Ministers who have made similar transitions in recent years:
- Kiran Kumar Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, joined the BJP in April 2023, a month after he resigned from the Congress. Reddy's opposition to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh led to his departure from the Congress in 2014, although he later rejoined the party in 2018 after an unsuccessful stint with his own party, 'Jai Samaikyandhra'.
- Captain Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, merged his party - the Punjab Lok Congress - with the BJP in September 2022 following his resignation from the Congress in November 2021.
- SM Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, crossed over to the BJP in March 2017, having served as a prominent Congress leader and also holding positions such as Maharashtra Governor and External Affairs Minister in the UPA government.
- Digambar Kamat, the former Chief Minister of Goa, rejoined the BJP in September 2022 after previously switching from the BJP to the Congress and then playing a significant role in toppling the BJP government in the state.
- Vijay Bahuguna, the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, joined the BJP in May 2016 along with several former MLAs from the state, following his resignation from the Congress earlier that year.
- Narayan Dutt Tiwari, who served as Chief Minister of both Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, along with his son Rohit Shekhar, joined the BJP in January 2017 after a long and illustrious political career spanning several decades.
- Pema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, switched to the BJP in December 2016 along with a significant number of MLAs from the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), consolidating his hold on power in the state.
