In a tragic incident in Karnataka's Chitradurga, a man lost Rs 1.5 crore in an online betting scheme, leading to his wife's suicide due to mounting financial pressure from loan lenders. The father of the 24-year-old woman reported the situation to the police, alleging that his daughter was under immense stress from loan lenders who frequently demanded repayment.
The couple married in 2020, and about a year later, the wife, Ranjitha, discovered that her husband, Darshan, was involved in cricket betting. The constant visits from lenders, seeking repayment of loans, led to frequent conflicts in their household, according to the complaint filed by Ranjitha's father.
The mental harassment Ranjitha endured ultimately drove her to take her own life, as stated in the complaint.
Darshan Babu, an assistant engineer with the irrigation department, had borrowed Rs 84 lakh from over a dozen lenders, all of which he lost in cricket betting. Shockingly, he had even provided blank cheques as collateral for his betting activities.
Authorities have initiated legal action under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), on abetment of suicide. Additionally, three lenders involved in the case have been arrested by the police.
