A controversy erupted on Tuesday as BJP leader Dilip Ghosh made disparaging remarks about the family background of Trinamool Congress supremo and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In a circulated clip on social media, Ghosh mocked Banerjee's assertion of being the "daughter of the state" and questioned her lineage, stating, "She should first decide who her father is."
Ghosh's comments were in response to the Trinamool Congress's slogan during the 2021 Bengal Assembly polls, 'Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye' (Bengal wants its own daughter).
His offensive statement drew condemnation from various Trinamool Congress leaders, who criticized Ghosh's misogynistic remarks. The Trinamool Congress filed a complaint against Ghosh with the Election Commission over his comments on Mamata Banerjee.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh lambasted Ghosh, denouncing the "misogynistic leadership" of the BJP in Bengal. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress candidate Kirti Azad, who is contesting against Ghosh in Bardhaman-Durgapur's seat, condemned the BJP leader's remarks against the only female Chief Minister of India.
The incident underscores the ongoing tension between the BJP and Trinamool Congress, marked by exchanges over the "insider-outsider" sentiment that gained prominence in the lead-up to the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections.
