Karnataka: A man kills a 22-year-old after arguing with his sister about roti

Last week in Karnataka's Yadgir district, a tragic incident unfolded resulting in the alleged killing of a 22-year-old Dalit man named Rakesh. The confrontation began when Rakesh engaged in a dispute with Fayaz's sister over the availability of chapati (roti).

Yadgir Superintendent of Police Sangeeta provided details, stating that Rakesh visited Fayaz's sister's shop to purchase roti. Upon learning that all the chapatis were sold out, Rakesh persisted in his request, causing a disturbance at the residence.

Finding herself alone, Fayaz's sister called her brother Fayaz for assistance. Upon Fayaz's arrival, a confrontation ensued between him and Rakesh. The verbal altercation turned physical, ultimately leading to Rakesh's demise.

Initially, the victim's family was reluctant to lodge a formal complaint, considering a monetary settlement with the perpetrators. However, SP Sangeeta convinced them to file an official complaint.

The Yadgir Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the precise cause of Rakesh's death.

The FIR has been registered under Sections 109 (punishment of abetment), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
