Siblings killed and several injured after car crashes into US child's birthday celebration

A tragic incident unfolded at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, Michigan, where a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver crashed into a young child’s birthday party, resulting in the deaths of a young brother and sister. Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough shared the harrowing details, stating that the crash occurred around 3 pm, causing the vehicle to penetrate 25 feet into the building.

The immediate aftermath was described as chaotic, with responders encountering heightened emotions among those directly affected and witnesses to the tragedy. Three children and six adults sustained life-threatening injuries and were swiftly transported to area hospitals via helicopters or ambulances. Additional individuals received initial medical assistance at the scene and were later conveyed to medical facilities by private vehicles.

While the sheriff did not disclose the identity of the driver, a 66-year-old woman, he revealed that she was apprehended and detained at the Monroe County Jail on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. Despite her cooperation with authorities, further charges may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

Authorities were alerted to the possibility that the woman had been at a nearby tavern prior to the incident. Consequently, the establishment was shut down, and plans were made to execute a search warrant as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic event.
