Strong gusts cause the eight-year-old Telangana bridge to collapse

The collapse of an under-construction bridge across the Manair River in Telangana's Peddapalli district has raised concerns about the handling of the project. Despite being under construction for the past eight years, the bridge collapsed amid adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong winds. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The bridge, aimed at connecting the Peddapalli and Bhupalpally districts, was expected to enhance connectivity and streamline transportation in the region. However, its completion has been marred by delays and mishandling of the project.

The foundation stone for the one-kilometer-long bridge was laid in 2016 with a budget of Rs 49 crore. However, despite significant investment and years of construction efforts, the project remains incomplete.

Reports suggest that the construction delays were primarily due to issues with the contractor, who reportedly halted work due to payment delays for completed tasks. This mishandling of the project has not only led to significant delays but also raised questions about the oversight and management of infrastructure projects in the region.

The collapse of the bridge underscores the importance of proper planning, execution, and oversight in infrastructure development to ensure the safety and well-being of communities. It serves as a reminder of the need for transparent and accountable practices in construction projects to avoid such incidents in the future.
