India is aiming for a bigger share of the global maritime market with Chabahar



The recent agreement between India and Iran regarding the management of the Chabahar Port has garnered attention, particularly due to the United States warning of potential sanctions. Despite this, India is committed to advancing the Chabahar project, recognizing its significance in realizing the nation's trade ambitions and unlocking economic potential.

Chabahar Port holds immense promise for India in terms of bolstering trade ties with Europe and Central Asia. Through this strategic port, India aims to facilitate the seamless movement of container ships from multiple Indian ports on the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal to destinations in Europe and Central Asia. This vision aligns with India's broader objective of positioning itself as a pivotal node in global shipping routes.

Over the past decade, India has made substantial strides in enhancing the efficiency and capacity of its major ports, resulting in significant growth in cargo handling and a reduction in turnaround time. These improvements underscore India's commitment to modernizing its maritime infrastructure and strengthening its position in international trade.

Chabahar Port represents a crucial gateway for India to tap into the vast potential of Central Asia and Afghanistan, providing alternative trade routes that bypass Pakistan. By fostering connectivity with these regions through Chabahar, India seeks to diversify its trade networks and reduce dependence on traditional routes.

The strategic location of Chabahar Port, near Pakistan's Gwadar Port developed with Chinese investment, underscores the geopolitical competition between India and China in the region. India views Chabahar as a strategic asset that not only counters China-Pakistan cooperation but also expands its influence beyond South Asia.

Moreover, Chabahar Port plays a pivotal role in initiatives like the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the South Asia Corridor, facilitating connectivity between Europe, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.
