Veteran filmmaker and cinematographer Shaji N Karun has passed away at the age of 73 after a prolonged battle with cancer. He breathed his last at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. Karun, who was an influential figure in Malayalam cinema, had an illustrious career that spanned decades, and his contributions to the industry were immense. He also served as the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), further cementing his role as a prominent figure in shaping the future of Malayalam cinema.
Karun's directorial debut, Piravi (1988), was a landmark film in Indian cinema, earning critical acclaim and winning a Special Mention at the prestigious Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989. The film also went on to win the National Film Awards for Best Film and Best Director, establishing Karun as a filmmaker of exceptional talent. His filmography is not only revered in India but has also made a mark on the international stage. Other notable films in his career include Swaham, Vanaprastham, Nishad, Kutty Sranku, and Swapaanam.
