Complete team player KL Rahul is unaware of his skill as a player: Gavaskar Sunil

Sunil Gavaskar has expressed deep admiration for KL Rahul’s temperament and adaptability, calling him a “total team man” who has willingly taken on various roles for the team, including wicketkeeping duties. However, the legendary cricketer believes Rahul has yet to truly unlock his full potential as a batter, particularly in Test cricket.

Rahul, who has often shuffled across different batting positions, now finds himself with a fresh opportunity at the top of the order following Rohit Sharma’s retirement. In the ongoing Test, he looked composed and confident, scoring 42 in the first innings before being dismissed. At stumps on Day 3, he remained unbeaten on 47, playing with fluency and helping India end the day at 90 for two, with a lead of 96 runs.

Speaking to the official broadcasters, Gavaskar praised Rahul’s calm demeanor and unselfish approach. “He’s got an equanimity about him that’s rare. In today’s world, where players are constantly looking to prove something, his subdued celebrations and steady approach stand out. He’s always ready to contribute in whatever role the team needs. But even he would probably admit — he hasn’t yet realised how good he truly is,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar emphasized Rahul’s technical prowess, especially highlighting his range of strokes on both sides of the wicket. “He’s got all the shots — the offside drives, flicks, and more. Watching him bat today, both off the front foot and the back foot, was thrilling. His straight drive and that classic cover drive — there’s so much beauty and timing in it,” Gavaskar noted.

However, Gavaskar also pointed out that Rahul’s career so far has not matched the level of talent he possesses. “There’s always been talk about how talented KL is, but perhaps it’s been some self-doubt or inconsistency that has kept him from fulfilling that promise — something that has affected quite a few Bangalore boys over the years.”

Gavaskar concluded by expressing hope that this series could be a turning point for Rahul. “If he can go on to get 500 or maybe even 700 runs in this series, it’ll be incredible not just for him but for Indian cricket.”
