Day 2 of the Kannappa box office: Vishnu Manchu's film surpasses Rs 15 crore but experiences a little decline

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has thrown his weight behind Shubman Gill as India’s new Test captain, urging the team management to give the youngster a long and stable run — regardless of immediate results in the ongoing England series.

Gill, at just 25, took over the reins following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format and marked his leadership debut with a composed century, becoming only the fifth Indian captain to do so. However, his effort was overshadowed as England pulled off a stunning fourth-innings chase of 371 runs, handing India a five-wicket defeat.

Despite the loss, Shastri praised Gill’s maturity, poise, and potential, saying:

“He’s matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses—he’s matured a lot. Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series.”

Shastri also compared Gill’s batting style to some of the greats:

“Languid, lazy elegance... he’s got a regal element when he’s batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t go places.”

Challenges Ahead

While Gill’s debut as captain showed flashes of promise, his on-field tactics came under scrutiny, particularly during England’s counterattack. His field placements, bowling changes, and use of spinners in crucial phases have been questioned by experts.

Edgbaston Test: High-Stakes Battle

India now face a tough task in the second Test starting July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham — a venue where they have historically struggled:

  • Played: 8

  • Lost: 7

  • Drawn: 1

  • Wins: 0

Gill and his side are not only looking to level the series but also hoping to rewrite history by winning at a ground where India has never tasted Test victory.

Summary

Gill’s leadership journey has begun under pressure, but the backing from a figure like Ravi Shastri signals the need for patience and faith in youth. As India transitions into a new era of Test cricket, Gill’s next big challenge will be to bounce back tactically and inspire his team in one of the toughest venues in England.
