Air India Flight 171, bound for London Gatwick with 242 people on board, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. The incident has led to a temporary suspension of all flight operations at the airport, officials confirmed.
Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating:
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.”
He added that the airline’s primary focus is to support emergency teams and provide assistance to affected families. An emergency centre and support team have been set up for those seeking information.
The airport released an official notice stating:
“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice.”
