According to the CEO of Ford, AI will soon cause 50% of white-collar employment to disappear, and US workers would be severely impacted

Ford CEO Jim Farley's stark prediction that 50% of white-collar jobs in the U.S. will be replaced by AI adds to growing concern over the future of work in an AI-driven world. Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Farley warned that AI will not just enhance productivity—it will eliminate a significant portion of administrative, managerial, and technical roles, leaving many white-collar workers behind.

This perspective echoes what other corporate leaders have begun to signal more openly in recent months:

  • Marianne Lake, a top executive at JPMorgan Chase, said the bank expects to cut 10% of operations headcount as AI becomes more integrated into its processes.

  • Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in a June memo, called AI a "once-in-a-lifetime" technology that will shrink corporate workforces, noting, “we will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today.”

  • Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei issued perhaps the most urgent warning, projecting that half of all entry-level jobs could vanish in 1–5 years, potentially pushing U.S. unemployment to 10–20%.

Amodei stressed the need for business and government leaders to acknowledge the disruption ahead rather than sugarcoat the impact.

Yet, not all leaders agree with the purely doomsday outlook. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman offered a more balanced view, suggesting AI will both destroy and create jobs, leading to a shift rather than a collapse in employment. “AI will totally take some jobs away and create a bunch of new ones,” he told Bloomberg, describing this as a two-phase transition.

In summary, while there's consensus that AI will deeply reshape white-collar employment, views differ on whether this shift will be a net loss or a net transformation. What’s clear is that corporate leaders are preparing for a radical redefinition of workforce dynamics, and governments may soon need to confront the economic and social consequences of large-scale AI-induced displacement.
