Families of the 166 crash victims receive Rs 25 lakh in interim aid from Air India

Air India has made significant efforts in recent weeks to provide meaningful financial support and comfort to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the devastating AI171 crash. According to the airline’s latest statement, interim compensation has already been disbursed to the families of 147 passengers who sadly died in the accident, along with 19 other individuals who lost their lives at the site of the crash. As part of this emergency response, each of these grieving families has received a compensation amount of Rs 25 lakh. This initial payment has been designed to help these families cope with immediate financial burdens such as funeral expenses, legal costs, and temporary living support, which can often become overwhelming after such an unexpected and tragic event.

The airline, in a public message released on Saturday, reassured the public and the affected families that it remains deeply committed to offering continued help and compassion to all those suffering as a result of this catastrophic incident. Air India expressed profound sorrow over the loss of so many lives and emphasized that this interim compensation is only the beginning of the support that will be extended. According to the airline, this payment is a temporary measure and will later be adjusted against the total and final compensation amount that the families are entitled to receive once the full evaluation and legal procedures are complete.

In addition to the interim aid already provided, Air India has confirmed that the required documents of 52 more deceased passengers have now been successfully verified. The airline assured that compensation to the families of these victims will be disbursed shortly, once all formalities are completed. The verification process, although time-consuming, is necessary to ensure that the aid reaches the right beneficiaries and that there are no legal complications later. This gradual process also highlights the airline’s focus on being meticulous and respectful during such sensitive proceedings.

In a more long-term and compassionate gesture, the Tata Group — which owns Air India — has set up a special initiative titled ‘The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’ in memory of the victims of the crash. This Trust is aimed not only at honoring those who lost their lives but also at supporting their families in a sustained manner. As part of this initiative, the Trust has promised to provide an ex gratia payment of Rs 1 crore to the family of each deceased passenger. This sum goes far beyond what is usually seen in corporate compensation, showing the seriousness and empathy with which the Tata Group is treating this tragedy. The Trust will also be involved in rebuilding damaged infrastructure, including support for the reconstruction of the BJ Medical College Hostel, which suffered significant structural damage as a result of the crash.

Moreover, the Trust is not just focused on those who directly lost their lives. It is also extending its gratitude and support to the many individuals and professionals who stepped forward in the aftermath of the accident. This includes first responders, who were among the first to reach the crash site and initiate rescue operations, as well as medical professionals who treated the injured, disaster relief workers who coordinated emergency responses, social workers who provided psychological support to the grieving, and government officials who managed the logistics and legal follow-up. These individuals played crucial roles in containing the impact of the disaster and are being rightfully recognized for their selfless efforts.

Through these combined actions — interim payments, final compensations, long-term memorial efforts, and acknowledgment of relief workers — both Air India and the Tata Group are demonstrating a strong and sustained commitment to healing the deep wounds caused by the AI171 tragedy. Their steps reflect not just corporate responsibility but also a genuine sense of national empathy and human solidarity.
