Following a roof collapse in Rajasthan that claimed seven lives, the center mandates safety evaluations in schools

Following the deeply tragic incident in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district, where seven students lost their lives due to the sudden collapse of a school building, the central government has issued an urgent and comprehensive directive to all states and union territories. This directive calls for a mandatory safety audit of every school, both government-run and private.

The audit is not limited to just structural integrity or fire safety, but extends its scope to cover the mental well-being of students, which is an essential yet often overlooked aspect of school safety. It further instructs educational institutions to establish formal reporting mechanisms so that students, teachers, and parents can raise safety concerns without fear or delay.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday at Piplodi Primary School, where the roof of a classroom collapsed while classes were in session. A rapid and massive rescue operation was launched involving local police, residents, and emergency officials, who worked together to save the children trapped under the rubble. The building, which was over two decades old, had a roof made of heavy stone slabs, a construction style that worsened the impact when it collapsed.

All the students who died were in Class 7 and were aged between 12 and 14 years. This tragedy has reignited the national conversation around the condition of aging school buildings and the urgent need for preventive infrastructure checks.

In response to the incident, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed deep sorrow and called it a devastating and heartbreaking event. He assured that the state government is doing everything possible to provide the best medical treatment to the injured children. In his condolence message, he prayed for the departed souls and asked for divine strength for the grieving families to endure the enormous pain they are going through.

The central government’s directive is a clear indication that the focus is now shifting toward not just reactive measures but proactive safety standards in schools to ensure such horrifying incidents do not recur in the future.
