Amid mounting public outrage over the alleged gangrape of a first-year law student in South Kolkata, the survivor's father has publicly demanded capital punishment for the accused, including prime accused Manojit Mishra and his two associates, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee.
In an emotional statement to India Today TV, the father said:
“I want nothing but the highest punishment for Manojit Mishra and the two others. I have full faith in Kolkata Police.”
According to police officials, the 24-year-old survivor was allegedly raped by Mishra inside the security guard’s room of South Calcutta Law College on June 25, while Ahmed and Mukherjee reportedly aided the crime. The accused were arrested on June 26, a day after the FIR was lodged at Kasba police station.
The survivor detailed in her FIR that she had visited the college for work when Mishra asked her to stay late, eventually proposing marriage, then forcing her into the security room where the assault took place. She recounted pleading with Mishra:
“I touched his feet, but he did not let me go.”
She also alleged that the trio blackmailed her with a video recording and threatened her into silence after the assault.
In a rare and striking development, the father of one of the accused also came forward, stating to ANI:
“First, I am a citizen of India, then a father. If my son is found guilty, he must be punished strictly. We have complete faith in the court and the Kolkata Police.”
All three accused were initially remanded to four days of police custody and, after a court hearing, their custody was extended till July 8. Another arrest was made in connection with the case—Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard at the college, was taken into custody for his alleged role.
The case has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed calls for systemic reforms in campus safety, fast-track justice, and zero tolerance for crimes against women.
