Manojit Mishra's legal license was revoked for alleged rape in Kolkata

The West Bengal Bar Council has revoked the licence of Manojit Mishra, effectively barring him from practising law anywhere in the state. This decisive action follows his identification as the prime accused in the alleged rape of a student at South Kolkata Law College—a case that has sparked public outrage and a deepening investigation.

The Bar Council acted within seven days of receiving a formal complaint, underscoring the seriousness with which it is treating the matter. At a meeting on July 2, it was unanimously decided to remove Mishra’s name from the state’s roll of lawyers, with the decision also to be formally communicated to the Bar Council of India.

Mishra, who was known to have ties with the Trinamool Congress student council (TMCP) and practiced in the Alipore court, is currently under arrest, along with three others, as part of an investigation led by the Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), supported by the Intelligence Department. The Detective Department has since taken over the probe.

On the academic front, South Calcutta Law College has also acted swiftly, expelling Mishra from his temporary administrative role, while also expelling both students involved in the case.

The Bar Council’s move sends a strong message on accountability and legal ethics, making it clear that serious criminal allegations—particularly those involving sexual violence—will result in swift and irreversible professional consequences.
