Amid President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown, a disturbing incident involving an illegal immigrant reportedly engaging in "autocannibalism" has drawn attention. The individual allegedly began harming and eating parts of himself during a deportation flight, forcing US Marshals to intervene and provide immediate medical care.
The bizarre episode was shared with US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem by federal marshals during her visit to the Alligator Alcatraz Detention Centre in Florida, alongside President Trump. Noem described the individual as a “cannibal,” saying marshals had detained him for deportation, but during the flight, he began mutilating himself in his seat.
“These are the kinds of deranged individuals on our streets that we’re trying to get out of our country,” Noem said, arguing that people like him are unfit to remain in American communities. She emphasized the risk such individuals pose to families and children seeking safety and stability.
The visit to Florida included a roundtable discussion with President Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, focusing on immigration enforcement and the rapid construction of a new detention facility. The detention centre, located about 65 kilometers west of Miami and surrounded by swamps filled with alligators and pythons, was reportedly built in just eight days. It will initially accommodate around 1,000 detainees, with the capacity to expand to 5,000.
Governor DeSantis confirmed that the first group of detainees was expected to arrive by Wednesday. Secretary Noem issued a stern warning to undocumented immigrants, encouraging them to self-deport to avoid ending up in such facilities. She said failure to do so could result in deportation without future eligibility for legal entry.
The Trump administration has continued to escalate immigration enforcement, citing record-high border crossings during Joe Biden’s presidency. According to government data, the number of people in immigration detention has increased significantly — from 39,000 at the beginning of Trump's term to 56,000 as of mid-June.
