Meet the engineer who plays the lead in India's first epic movie, which costs Rs 835 crore

Indian actors are increasingly expanding their horizons—balancing acting, entrepreneurship, and academic pursuits. Among them is Ravi Dubey, a multi-faceted talent set to portray Laxman in Nitesh Tiwari's highly anticipated two-part epic film series, Ramayana: Part 1 and 2. This marks a major leap for the actor, once best known for his role in the TV show Jamaai Raja (2014–2017).

Originally an electronics and telecom engineering student from Mumbai's Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Ravi pursued engineering as a backup, inspired by his father, civil engineer Gyan Prakash Dubey. He began with modelling, debuted in Stree... Teri Kahaani (2006–2007), and gradually made his mark in Indian television.

In his personal life, Ravi married co-star Sargun Mehta from 12/24 Karol Bagh in 2013. Together, they run Dreamiyata Entertainment, which has produced several Hindi TV shows such as Udaariyaan, Junooniyat, Dalchini, and Badall Pe Paon Hai. He also starred opposite Nia Sharma in Jamai 2.0 (2019–2021).

Ravi now joins the cast of Ramayana: Part 1, sharing the screen with Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram. A video showing the two actors emotional during the wrap-up shoot recently surfaced, highlighting the emotional weight of the project.

The film’s estimated budget of ₹835 crore makes it India’s most expensive production to date—surpassing Brahmastra (₹410 crore), Adipurush and RRR (₹550 crore each), and even Kalki 2898 AD (₹600 crore). It is backed by Namit Malhotra, the owner of Prime Focus and CEO of the Oscar-winning VFX giant DNEG, which is also handling the visual effects for the film.

Hollywood’s Guy Norris, known for his work in Mad Max, is choreographing the action scenes. Actor Yash, who plays Raavana, was recently spotted shooting a high-octane sequence with Norris. The film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and features Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan in prominent roles.

The first glimpse of Ramayana: Part 1 will be unveiled on July 3, and the film is slated for a Diwali 2026 release.
