Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing stops a scam with a connection to China and rescues eight victims from various states

The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has uncovered a major international investment scam operated by cybercriminals with suspected Chinese links, preventing further financial losses for several Indian victims.

According to an official press release on July 2, 2025, the State Cyber Command Centre identified eight victims from different states — two each from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, and one each from Rajasthan, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh — who were being manipulated by fraudsters through fake online investment platforms that promised high returns.

A team led by Tmt. Shahnaz Illyas, IPS, Superintendent of Police, traced mule bank accounts allegedly controlled by the scammers. These accounts were immediately flagged and placed under surveillance in coordination with fraud risk management teams from various banks.

Investigators uncovered high-value international transactions, indicating the presence of a well-organized global fraud network. Significantly, none of the eight identified victims had lodged complaints at the time, but were found to be actively engaging with the scammers.

Prompt action by Tamil Nadu's cybercrime unit led to timely alerts being issued to cyber police in the affected states. Cases have now been registered, and victims were stopped from making further transfers.

Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal, IPS, praised the swift action of the investigation team. ADGP Dr. Sandeep Mittal, IPS, also issued a public advisory, warning citizens to be cautious of:

  • Online investment schemes offering unrealistic returns

  • Sharing personal or banking details with strangers

  • Lending bank accounts, ATM cards, or SIM cards to others

He also recommended:

  • Activating two-factor authentication

  • Using strong, unique passwords

  • Educating family members, especially senior citizens, about online fraud tactics

Authorities emphasized that awareness and caution are key to staying safe in the digital space.
