A rare mid-air birth occurred on an Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai when a Thai passenger went into labour during the journey. The airline confirmed the successful delivery of a healthy baby onboard, attributing the outcome to the crew’s preparedness and timely support from a nurse who happened to be among the passengers.
As soon as the woman went into labour, the cabin crew, trained to handle in-flight emergencies, acted swiftly to create a safe environment for the birth. The airline highlighted that its team’s rigorous training ensured both the mother and baby remained safe and comfortable throughout the ordeal.
Pilots coordinated with Air Traffic Control to arrange for a priority landing in Mumbai. Upon arrival, medical personnel were ready to assist, and both mother and child were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for further care. An airline staff member accompanied them to ensure continued support.
Air India Express, in a statement, praised the teamwork and compassion displayed during the emergency. The airline is working with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to assist the passenger’s return home.
The incident, according to the airline, demonstrated seamless coordination between the cockpit, cabin crew, ground staff, and emergency responders — reflecting the airline’s values of agility and empathy.
