Genelia Deshmukh recently opened up about her comeback with Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par and shared how the role came her way. In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, she revealed that it was a casual encounter between Aamir Khan and her husband Riteish Deshmukh that led to the opportunity. Aamir reportedly asked Riteish if Genelia was still working, and upon hearing that she was, he recommended that she meet the film's director, RS Prasanna. After auditioning, she landed the role — a process she embraced despite being in the industry for over two decades.
"Why audition after 20 years? Some may wonder," she said, "but I genuinely believe it’s a great way to land a film, and I’m excited I did it."
Genelia also expressed heartfelt gratitude for the audience’s affection, especially after her prolonged absence from the mainstream. “I didn’t do much work in the last 10 years... I thought people would forget me,” she admitted. “But hearing them say they want to see more — that’s the best compliment.”
Reflecting on the film’s reception, she acknowledged that being part of an Aamir Khan project naturally brought attention, but she was touched to be individually appreciated by audiences. “In that takeaway, I didn’t think I’d exist. But it feels special to know people noticed me,” she added.
Talking about Sitaare Zameen Par’s box office growth, she credited the success to strong word-of-mouth. “From Friday to Sunday, the rise in collections was all because of the love it got from the audience. I really wanted the film to do well for the sitaares — the children in the film — and I’m glad it picked up.”
She also shared that Sitaare Zameen Par is the first film she’s done that focuses on inclusion, making it all the more meaningful for her.
Next up, Genelia will be seen in Gunmaaster G9, co-starring Emraan Hashmi. The film will also mark a musical reunion with Himesh Reshammiya, promising a nostalgic treat for fans.
