In a significant defense boost, India tests the Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile


On Wednesday, India achieved a significant milestone in strengthening its defence preparedness by successfully test-firing the Agni-5 ballistic missile from the Odisha coast. The trial was conducted from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, and it successfully validated all its operational and technical parameters. This successful launch not only marks a remarkable achievement for the nation but also reinforces India’s growing stature in the realm of strategic defence and advanced missile technology. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the test had been carried out flawlessly, underscoring the country’s ability to develop and deploy highly sophisticated weapons systems that contribute to its long-term security objectives.

The Agni-5, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), stands as the most advanced missile in the prestigious Agni series. With a strike range exceeding 5,000 kilometres, it places India among a select group of nations capable of launching long-range nuclear-capable ballistic missiles. This missile serves as a critical component of India’s land-based nuclear deterrence, providing a formidable shield against external threats and ensuring that the nation’s strategic arsenal is both credible and reliable. Its nuclear capability significantly boosts India’s ability to maintain a strong deterrent posture in a region marked by complex security challenges.

One of the most striking features of the Agni-5 is its capacity to carry a nuclear warhead weighing up to 1.5 tonnes. To further enhance its performance, it has been constructed using lightweight composite materials, a design choice that improves both efficiency and reliability while maintaining high levels of safety. This use of advanced materials represents a major leap in missile engineering, allowing the system to remain durable under extreme conditions and ensuring consistent performance across a variety of operational scenarios.

Adding to its strategic edge, the Agni-5 incorporates Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. This cutting-edge system enables a single missile to deliver multiple warheads at different targets simultaneously. Such an ability dramatically enhances its overall effectiveness, as it allows for precise engagement of multiple strategic points with a single launch, thereby amplifying India’s deterrence capabilities. To achieve pinpoint accuracy, the missile integrates advanced navigation and guidance systems. It employs a ring laser gyroscope-based inertial navigation system (RLG-INS) alongside a micro-inertial navigation system (MINGS). These systems are further supported by satellite-based navigation aids, including India’s indigenous NavIC and the United States’ GPS, which together ensure highly accurate targeting and reliable performance under varied conditions. The presence of such multiple layers of guidance highlights the emphasis placed on precision and effectiveness in the missile’s design.

The Agni-5 is powered by a sophisticated three-stage, solid-fuel propulsion system. This design choice contributes to its high speed, stability, and reliability during flight. Furthermore, the missile is launched from a canisterised platform, which provides several operational advantages. Canisterisation allows for quicker deployment, easier transportation and storage, and improved mobility, thereby making the missile launch-ready at short notice. This feature ensures that India maintains a state of readiness to respond swiftly in case of emerging threats.

Over the years, the missile has also benefited from several significant technological upgrades. Enhancements such as advanced avionics, improved re-entry heat shielding, and refined guidance systems have strengthened its overall performance and reliability. These improvements reflect India’s continued investment in innovation and its determination to remain at the forefront of defence technology. The success of the Agni-5 test, therefore, not only showcases India’s scientific and technological progress but also highlights its commitment to safeguarding national security in a rapidly evolving global environment.
