Manipur refutes charges of illegal work, while the center supports the need for a Kuki hill road

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has formally urged the Manipur government to examine a proposal for creating a dedicated road corridor linking the hill districts to the rest of the state. The recommendation follows the submission of a memorandum by Kuki Inpi Manipur, which appealed for urgent action to restore connectivity to regions that have faced prolonged isolation.

In an official communication dated August 6, 2025, Joint Director Pausianmuang Tunglut forwarded to the Chief Secretary of Manipur a copy of the memorandum originally sent to the President of India on August 1. The Kuki Inpi’s request cited a worsening humanitarian crisis in the hill areas, which they said has been exacerbated by ethnic violence, an economic blockade, and restricted movement since May 2023. The group stressed that the proposed corridor is critical for the transport of essential goods, healthcare access, and economic recovery.

The memorandum described the corridor as the “lifeline of the Hill Areas,” pointing out that existing routes have been rendered unreliable due to security threats, damaged infrastructure, and logistical bottlenecks. It urged that without swift intervention, the isolation could lead to further economic stagnation and deepen the ongoing humanitarian emergency in the region.

Separately, during a meeting between the Manipur government and the Foothill Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC) on Friday, state officials addressed concerns about alleged unauthorised road construction in foothill regions. The government categorically denied any approval or sanctioning of road projects without proper procedures. Officials also assured that allegations of illegal construction would be thoroughly investigated and that legal action would be taken if violations were confirmed.

The state further reiterated its position that no unauthorised naming of roads or development on disputed land would be allowed, underlining its commitment to following due process in all infrastructure projects.
