UP dowry death: victim's husband sent in 14-day custody, mother-in-law arrested

Police authorities in Greater Noida took a major step in the ongoing dowry death case by arresting the victim’s mother-in-law, only a few hours after her husband, Vipin Bhati, was shot while trying to flee police custody. Vipin, who is the prime accused in the murder of his wife, Nikki Bhati, was earlier sent to a 14-day judicial custody following his failed escape attempt. The incident has drawn nationwide outrage, once again highlighting the deep-rooted menace of dowry-related violence in India.

According to statements given by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Greater Noida, another accused has also been arrested in connection with the case. The victim’s mother-in-law, identified as Sans Dayawati, was apprehended near JIMS Hospital. Acting on a tip-off, police found her while she was reportedly heading to meet her injured son, Vipin, who had sustained a gunshot wound during his attempted escape from custody. Her arrest has further tightened the investigation against the family, who are now facing severe legal consequences.

Earlier the same day, a shocking sequence of events unfolded when Vipin Bhati attempted to break free from police custody. He was being taken to recover a bottle of inflammable liquid, allegedly purchased to carry out the horrific attack, when he suddenly tried to snatch a pistol from one of the escorting officers. Ignoring repeated warnings from police officials, he fled near Sirsa Chauraha. In response, officers opened fire, and a bullet struck his leg, bringing his escape attempt to an end. Vipin was quickly recaptured and transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

When questioned after the incident, Vipin displayed a disturbing lack of remorse. In front of the authorities, he coldly stated, “I have no regret. I haven’t killed her. She died on her own.” This chilling statement has intensified public anger, as it portrays a complete denial of responsibility in the face of overwhelming evidence.

The victim, 26-year-old Nikki Bhati, endured unimaginable suffering before her tragic death. Reports state that she was brutally beaten and then set ablaze by her in-laws inside her own home, in full view of her six-year-old son and younger sister. In heart-wrenching testimony, her son recounted the horrifying moment: “They poured something on my mother, slapped her, and then set her on fire with a lighter.” This child’s innocent words revealed the sheer cruelty of the attack, leaving the public shaken.

Videos circulating widely on social media have further exposed the brutality inflicted upon Nikki. One clip shows her being dragged by her hair and mercilessly assaulted. Another clip shows her limping and struggling down the stairs, moments after being set ablaze. These visuals have sparked outrage across the country, with many demanding swift and exemplary punishment for the culprits.

Nikki’s father, devastated by the loss of his daughter, revealed the long history of harassment she faced at the hands of her in-laws. Despite fulfilling repeated dowry demands, the torture never stopped. “First, they demanded a Scorpio in dowry, which we gave. Then they asked for a Bullet bike, and we provided that as well. Yet, they kept tormenting my daughter,” he told reporters. Preliminary investigations have further revealed that Vipin had recently demanded a Mercedes car from Nikki’s family, which her father had purchased. This relentless greed appears to have escalated into the deadly attack.

In response to the shocking incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken immediate cognizance of the matter. Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written directly to the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, demanding urgent action. The Commission has directed that all accused be arrested without delay and that the investigation be carried out in a fair, transparent, and time-bound manner. Additionally, the NCW has stressed the need to ensure the safety of Nikki’s family members and key witnesses, who may be at risk of intimidation.

The Commission has also demanded that the DGP submit a detailed action report within three days. This move signals the seriousness with which the case is being treated at the national level. Women’s rights groups and social activists across the country have echoed the Commission’s demand, calling for the strictest possible punishment for those responsible.

The case of Nikki Bhati is not just another crime; it is a grim reminder of how the dowry system, despite being illegal in India, continues to claim lives in brutal ways. It has exposed how material greed, when combined with patriarchal oppression, can destroy families and futures. The incident has reignited calls for stronger enforcement of dowry laws and more protective measures for women trapped in abusive households.

This tragic event has deeply unsettled the public, and many are watching closely to see how swiftly and decisively justice is delivered. The arrests of both the husband and mother-in-law mark a crucial step in the case, but for Nikki’s grieving family, true justice will only be served when the guilty are punished under the full force of the law.
