Sub-inspector Chandradeep Nishad, whose home was overtaken by the swelling Ganga, responded not with fear or frustration, but reverence. He performed a ritual aarti at his doorstep, now submerged in floodwaters, and shared the moment on social media, captioning it with praise for “Mother Ganga.”
Nishad, who is attached as PSO to a judge at the Allahabad High Court, lives in Daraganj, a locality among the many inundated due to the river’s rise. His videos — one showing him offering prayers at the waterlogged entrance of his home, another capturing him wading through waist-deep water and taking a dip inside his house — quickly went viral, sparking a range of reactions online.
While many appreciated his devotion, seeing it as a symbolic gesture of faith in times of crisis, others criticized what they saw as a normalization of disaster and a lack of infrastructure preparedness. Some comments questioned whether the same reverence would be possible or sustainable if the floods affected poorer households with devastating consequences.
Nonetheless, Nishad’s response underscores a cultural resilience — and deep-rooted spirituality — that persists even in the face of natural calamity. Meanwhile, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have ramped up emergency measures. With large parts of Prayagraj submerged, nearly 100 flood relief camps have been established, and rescue teams are actively engaged in evacuating residents and supplying essentials to those stranded.
