A Ganesh idol immersion procession in Karnataka’s Hassan district ended in tragedy on Friday when a speeding truck lost control and rammed into a group of devotees. The devastating accident, which unfolded on National Highway-373, claimed the lives of at least eight people and left 25 others with serious injuries. The incident occurred when the truck driver, in an attempt to avoid a bike approaching from the opposite direction, swerved and crashed into the crowd.
According to Hassan Superintendent of Police Mohammed Sujeetha MS, five people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries during treatment at hospitals. The truck driver himself sustained injuries in the collision and has since been taken into custody. Police officials confirmed that among the 25 injured, 18 were admitted to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), while seven others received treatment at nearby private hospitals.
The accident cast a dark shadow over what was supposed to be a day of devotion and festivity, leaving the community in shock. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his grief over the incident, calling it deeply saddening. He announced that the state government would provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to each of the victims’ families. In addition, the government has assured that it will cover all medical expenses of the injured to ease the burden on grieving families.
Taking to social media, the Chief Minister said, “It is heartbreaking to learn of the loss of several lives and injuries to many others during the Ganesh immersion procession in Hassan. I pray for the souls of the deceased to find peace and for the speedy recovery of those injured.” He added that the state stood in solidarity with the affected families during this painful time.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also conveyed his condolences, describing the tragedy as “horrific” and shocking. In his message, he said he was extremely saddened by the deaths and prayed for the victims’ families to find the strength to endure their loss. Shivakumar reiterated that the government would ensure compensation for the deceased and bear the medical costs for the injured.
The accident has not only left families mourning but has also reignited concerns about safety measures during large public processions on busy highways. What began as a religious procession meant to unite communities in devotion has now turned into a grim reminder of how a single moment of chaos can alter countless lives. The people of Hassan, while mourning the loss, are also calling for greater vigilance to ensure such tragedies do not repeat in the future.
