Mohammed Zaid, a Hyderabad student, passes away from his wounds following a US accident

Mohammed Zaid, a 20-year-old student from Old Malakpet in Hyderabad, met a tragic end in the United States after being fatally injured in a road accident. Zaid was pursuing his graduation in health professions and related clinical sciences at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, where he had been living as part of his academic journey. His life was cut short earlier this month when a speeding car struck him while he was on his way to purchase groceries.

The accident took place on September 7, after which Zaid was immediately rushed to St. Vincent’s Medical Centre, a part of Hartford Healthcare. Despite receiving urgent medical attention, he battled for survival before eventually succumbing to his injuries. His untimely death has sent shockwaves among his family in Hyderabad and members of the Indian community abroad.

Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan has been actively supporting Zaid’s family through the tragedy. He revealed that Zaid’s parents had tried to travel to the US after the incident but were unable to make the journey due to unavoidable circumstances. Stricken with grief, they have appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to intervene and facilitate the repatriation of their son’s mortal remains to Hyderabad so that final rites can be performed in his hometown.

Khan has also expressed strong criticism against the lack of assistance from Indian diplomatic missions. In a series of posts on social media, he highlighted the silence of officials from the Embassy of India in Washington, DC, the Consulate General of India in New York, the US Embassy in New Delhi, and the US Consulate in Hyderabad. He lamented that neither Indian representatives in Washington nor New York made efforts to visit Zaid in the hospital during his final days, nor did they communicate with his grieving parents.

This absence of official response has intensified the family’s anguish as they continue to wait for their son’s remains to be brought home. The tragedy underscores the challenges faced by Indian families when students studying abroad encounter unforeseen crises, leaving them dependent on timely government and diplomatic support.
