Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today welcome the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in Varanasi, where the two leaders are set to engage in a round of bilateral discussions. Ramgoolam is currently in India on a state visit, marking an important moment in the deepening of ties between the two nations. The talks are expected to last for nearly two hours, during which both leaders will deliberate on a wide range of issues concerning development, cooperation, and partnership. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi will leave for Dehradun, where he is scheduled to conduct an aerial survey of the flood-ravaged regions in Uttarakhand, assessing the extent of devastation caused by the recent natural disaster.
According to an official statement, the discussions will focus on reviewing the current framework of bilateral cooperation, with special attention given to areas such as development partnership and capacity building. The agenda also extends to exploring avenues for expanding collaboration across critical sectors, including health, education, science and technology, infrastructure development, and energy security. Both leaders are expected to engage in opportunities emerging in new-age domains such as renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and the blue economy, signaling a shared vision for sustainable growth and innovation.
The statement further described the upcoming dialogue as a defining moment in the shared journey of India and Mauritius, underscoring that the “Varanasi Summit will mark a significant milestone in the pursuit of mutual prosperity, sustainable development, and a secure and inclusive future.” This reflects the broader strategic outlook both countries are adopting in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics and the increasing importance of regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean.
Ramgoolam’s state visit, which commenced with his arrival in Mumbai on Tuesday, will conclude on September 16. His presence in India highlights the enduring cultural, historical, and strategic ties binding the two countries. Earlier this year, in March, during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius, the two nations took a major step forward by elevating their relationship to the status of an “enhanced strategic partnership.” On that occasion, both governments signed eight key agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas such as maritime security, trade in local currencies, and wider economic engagement.
It was also during that visit that Prime Minister Modi unveiled India’s new vision for the Global South under the banner of “MAHASAGAR” — an acronym for “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.” This initiative was articulated against the backdrop of increasing Chinese attempts to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean, and it signaled India’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, secure, and cooperative environment in the region. The ongoing summit in Varanasi is expected to further cement this vision, while reinforcing India and Mauritius’s role as close partners in shaping the future of regional and global cooperation.
