Police begin a manhunt after a prisoner breaks out of an Andhra Pradesh jail during a court transit

A prisoner named Battula Prabhakar escaped from police custody in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday evening while being brought back from a court hearing in Vijayawada. The 35-year-old, who had been lodged at Rajamahendravaram Central Jail, fled near Duddukuru village in Devarapalli mandal at around 7:30 p.m., managing to break free despite still being handcuffed on one hand. At the time, he was wearing a white T-shirt and black track pants.

Authorities have issued a public appeal for information on his whereabouts, providing contact numbers for the Devarapalli Inspector (94407 96584) and Sub-Inspector (94407 96624), and have announced a reward for credible leads that result in his capture.

Prabhakar is a notorious criminal linked to over 100 burglary and robbery cases across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He was previously arrested in Visakhapatnam in 2020, escaped custody in March 2022 while being transported from court to jail, and was arrested again in February 2025 after a shootout at a pub in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli. Police are currently following multiple leads to recapture him.
