An unsettling incident in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district has stirred widespread public anger after visuals emerged showing an elderly man being assaulted by a police officer during an Ungaludan Stalin grievance redressal camp in Saathur. The programme, initiated by the state government, is designed to bring officials closer to the public and resolve long-pending issues, particularly those related to land disputes. However, the shocking episode has shifted focus from governance to questions of police conduct and official accountability.
The victim, identified as Venkatapathy, a resident of Uppupettai, had reportedly come to the camp with a petition concerning his grievance. According to his statement, the official responsible refused to issue him an acknowledgment slip and, in a shocking turn, allegedly attacked him. Venkatapathy is said to have sustained a head injury during the altercation but later returned to the venue, determined to confront the official about the mistreatment he faced.
Tensions escalated further when the police intervened. In an attempt to remove the elderly man from the premises, one officer was caught on camera pushing and striking him. The disturbing footage, showing the officer punching Venkatapathy, quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking outrage among the public and raising sharp criticism of the authorities.
In response to the assault, Venkatapathy declared that he would file formal complaints against both the government official who allegedly assaulted him initially and the police officer who manhandled him during the camp. The viral incident has now intensified debates in Tamil Nadu about the treatment of ordinary citizens at public grievance forums, the responsibility of officials to act with sensitivity, and the urgent need for accountability in cases of misuse of authority.
