A massive tragedy unfolded in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday during a political rally held by actor-turned-politician Vijay, chief of the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), as a stampede claimed over 30 lives and left several others critically injured. The rally, which drew an estimated crowd of nearly one lakh people eager to see and hear Vijay, turned chaotic when panic spread following the report of a missing nine-year-old girl. Eyewitness accounts suggested that as a large section of the gathering surged in one direction in search of the child, the movement of the massive crowd spiralled out of control, overwhelming the security personnel who had been deployed to maintain order.
The situation quickly escalated as many people, including women and children, were caught in the crush. Several fainted due to suffocation and exhaustion, and those who collapsed were rushed to the nearest hospitals. However, ambulances faced difficulty in maneuvering through the dense crowd, causing delays in transporting patients for emergency treatment. Authorities reported that many victims remained in critical condition despite efforts to provide immediate medical care.
Amid the unfolding chaos, Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy” among his vast fan base, cut short his speech and personally appealed to the crowd and police officials to restore calm. Witnesses recalled hearing him plead with security forces to step in and control the disorder as panic spread about the missing child. His efforts to pacify the gathering underscored the severity of the crisis, but the magnitude of the crowd made it difficult for order to be restored swiftly.
Political leaders across Tamil Nadu expressed shock and grief at the incident. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin termed the events deeply worrying and announced that he had instructed all concerned authorities to provide the fastest possible medical assistance to those injured. He confirmed having spoken directly with ministers, district officials, and the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) to ensure immediate relief measures were taken. Stalin also appealed to the public to cooperate with medical staff and law enforcement officers as efforts continued to stabilize the situation.
Former Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary E. Palaniswami also reacted strongly, calling the stampede “shocking and heartbreaking.” He expressed his condolences to the families of those who had lost their lives and emphasized that AIADMK cadres had been mobilized to assist victims and their families at hospitals. Palaniswami further instructed former minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar to personally oversee relief measures at the government hospital and extend all required support to those undergoing treatment.
The Karur stampede has highlighted the risks posed by massive political gatherings in the absence of adequate crowd management mechanisms. With several families devastated and dozens injured, the tragedy has cast a dark shadow over the election campaign, raising pressing concerns about public safety at large-scale political events in Tamil Nadu.
