31 people were killed in a stampede at Vijay's rally in Tamil Nadu, including women and children

A political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, turned into a major tragedy on Saturday when a massive crowd at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s campaign meeting spiralled out of control, triggering a deadly stampede. At least 31 people, including women and children, are feared dead, while many others were left injured or unconscious due to overcrowding and suffocation. The event, which had officially been granted permission for a turnout of around 10,000 people, witnessed nearly five times that number, with close to 50,000 attendees crammed into a venue measuring about 1.20 lakh square feet. The overcrowding led to severe pressure within the gathering, with several party workers and children fainting, forcing Vijay to halt his speech and appeal for calm as ambulances struggled to reach those in distress.

In the wake of the tragedy, senior ministers, police officials, and administrators rushed to the spot to contain the situation and extend immediate assistance. Health Minister Ma Subramanian, DMK leader Senthil Balaji, and the district collector personally visited the hospital to oversee treatment for the victims. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reacted swiftly, posting on social media that the developments from Karur were deeply worrying. He said he had instructed authorities to provide emergency medical care to all those injured and had spoken with key ministers, senior police officers, and district officials to ensure support. Minister Anbil Mahesh was also dispatched from neighbouring Tiruchirappalli to help coordinate relief efforts. Stalin urged the public to cooperate with medical staff and police, while also assuring that he would visit Karur to assess the situation in person.

Police were forced to resort to baton charges in parts of Karur to disperse the swelling crowd after several fainting incidents were reported. Water bottles were distributed to those struggling in the heat and crush, and emergency medical teams were quickly deployed. Despite these measures, panic deepened when a nine-year-old girl was reported missing during the commotion. Vijay, visibly concerned, appealed publicly to the police for assistance and urged his cadres to help trace the child. This sudden movement further intensified the chaos within the rally.

The tragedy also drew attention at the national level, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing grief and extending condolences to the bereaved families. Calling the incident “deeply saddening,” the Prime Minister prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and offered words of support to those affected.

The rally itself had been politically charged before the chaos erupted. Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy” by his supporters, had indirectly criticised the DMK during his speech. Without naming former minister Senthil Balaji directly, he accused the ruling party of making empty promises, particularly pointing to their earlier pledge of building an airport in Karur, which was later shifted as a request to the Centre. He also declared that Tamil Nadu’s political landscape would witness a change in power within the next six months, marking the rally as a critical step in his statewide campaign ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Authorities eventually managed to restore order after several tense hours, allowing the rally to conclude without further escalation. Yet, the deaths and injuries have raised pressing concerns over crowd management, safety arrangements, and accountability in large-scale political gatherings in the state. The Karur stampede is now under close investigation, with both state officials and law enforcement agencies examining the lapses that led to one of Tamil Nadu’s worst recent political rally disasters.
