The sudden death of a fourth-year MBBS student, Anindita Soren of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has sparked shock and controversy after she collapsed during a visit to Malda and passed away shortly afterward. Anindita, a native of Dakshin Dinajpur, had travelled to Malda to meet her boyfriend, Ujjwal Soren, a junior doctor at Malda Medical College. According to police reports, she fell ill on Thursday and was admitted to the hospital where Ujjwal worked. Her health deteriorated rapidly, and while being shifted to Kolkata for advanced treatment, she died near Sujapur late Friday night.
Her mother, Alpana Tudu, has leveled serious allegations against Ujjwal, claiming that her daughter was poisoned because she had been pressuring him to formalize their relationship through a social marriage. While the family asserts that the couple had already undergone a temple marriage, they allege that Ujjwal was unwilling to go ahead with a registered or public ceremony, leading to repeated disputes and what they described as mental harassment. The grieving mother also criticized the quality of care provided at Malda Medical College, saying Anindita’s condition was mishandled and that she had been informed of her daughter foaming at the mouth before her death.
The circumstances surrounding Anindita’s visit have also raised suspicion within her family. They noted that she had recently been home in Balurghat and questioned how she ended up in Malda, only to succumb so suddenly. Alpana Tudu has demanded justice and a thorough investigation, stressing that her daughter’s death could not be dismissed as a natural illness.
Following the complaint, police arrested Ujjwal on Sunday. He was presented before the Malda District Court, where investigators sought seven days of custody to question him further. A case has been registered under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 69, 89, 123, 103(1), and 351(2). Authorities have indicated that the autopsy report will be key to determining the exact cause of Anindita’s death and whether foul play was involved.
The case has cast a spotlight not only on the personal dispute between the two medical students but also on the medical institution’s handling of the situation, with growing demands for transparency and accountability.
