After a 9-year-old dies at a hospital in Kerala, a father uses a machete to attack a doctor

Following the attack, local health authorities issued a statement urging the public to exercise patience and trust medical professionals, emphasizing that the rare infection was not due to negligence. “Doctors and hospital staff work tirelessly to save lives. Violence against them not only endangers their safety but also disrupts essential healthcare services,” the statement read.

The Kerala Medical Association (KMA) also condemned the assault, calling it a “disturbing act of retaliation” and appealing to the government for stricter security measures at hospitals. KMA officials highlighted that attacks on doctors have been rising in recent years, and such incidents undermine public health efforts.

In response, Thamarassery Taluk Hospital has announced the installation of additional surveillance cameras and the deployment of security personnel at all entrances. The administration also plans to conduct awareness sessions for visitors to educate them about rare medical conditions like amoebic meningoencephalitis and the importance of cooperation with healthcare providers.

Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to determine whether the attack was premeditated. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to understand how Sanoop managed to bring the machete into the hospital premises. The accused remains in custody, and legal proceedings are expected to follow under stringent provisions for assault and endangering public servants.

Medical experts have reiterated that amoebic meningoencephalitis is extremely rare and progresses rapidly, often leaving little scope for successful treatment. They urged families to rely on professional medical advice and not resort to acts of violence in grief or frustration.
