Sanjay Raut says he has a serious health problem; the PM wishes him well

Sanjay Raut, a senior leader from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction aligned with Uddhav Thackeray, has announced a temporary withdrawal from political activities due to a serious medical condition. His absence comes at a politically sensitive moment in Maharashtra, with several major elections approaching in the coming months. Following his announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended wishes for his swift recovery, marking a notable exchange between two leaders who have often been publicly critical of each other.

Raut disclosed his health concerns through a post on X, explaining that doctors have advised him to avoid public interactions and remain away from political engagements for the time being. He reassured his supporters that he is receiving treatment and expressed optimism about returning in better health next year. In his post, Raut thanked the public for their support and reiterated his determination to recover fully. Soon after, PM Modi responded with a message wishing him good health and a quick recovery. Raut acknowledged this and conveyed gratitude on behalf of his family.

The timing of Raut’s temporary withdrawal is significant. Maharashtra is on the verge of launching a cycle of key electoral contests, beginning with municipal council elections expected in mid-November, followed by Zilla Parishad polls in December. The high-profile Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are anticipated in January. The BMC is particularly symbolic for the Shiv Sena, as the party governed the corporation for more than two decades before the split in 2022. Raut has been one of the most vocal and strategic figures in the Uddhav-led faction, and his absence during this critical run-up will be closely felt within the party’s campaign machinery.

In recent years, Raut has consistently been one of the harshest critics of the Modi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party. His commentary has spanned topics such as national security, elections, and institutional independence. In multiple instances, he has questioned the actions and statements of the Prime Minister, often linking them to larger concerns regarding governance, democracy, and political conduct. His outspoken stance has made him a central figure in Maharashtra’s opposition ranks and a prominent national voice within the INDIA alliance.

With his health now taking priority, Raut’s temporary exit from the political arena leaves a visible gap within the Shiv Sena (UBT) leadership. As Maharashtra braces for a series of important elections, his party will need to navigate the landscape without one of its most experienced communicators and strategists. For now, Raut remains focused on recovery, while the state’s political atmosphere continues to intensify in his absence.
