The father of the 23-year-old medical student sexually assaulted in Durgapur last week has demanded the “strongest possible punishment” for the accused and announced plans to leave West Bengal, describing the ordeal as “unbearable.” He expressed deep disappointment, saying he had brought his daughter to the state with hopes of supporting her medical career, but the incident has left him determined to return to Odisha to safeguard her well-being.
Speaking to reporters, he urged the authorities to ensure strict justice and welcomed a potential CBI investigation, though he noted it would depend on the state government’s decision. He also addressed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating his respect and clarifying that his remarks were aimed solely at securing justice for his daughter.
Police have arrested Wasif Ali, the survivor’s classmate who was with her on the night of the assault, naming him the prime accused. This marks the sixth arrest in the case. Authorities have ruled out a gang-rape, confirming that evidence points to a single perpetrator, though Ali’s friend remains under investigation.
The assault occurred on October 10 near the student’s college in a forested area. According to her statement, she was threatened to remain silent during the attack. The case has sparked political controversy, with the BJP criticizing the Trinamool Congress government over law and order issues and Mamata Banerjee facing backlash for comments suggesting women should not go out at night.
