Authorities received a bomb threat message for an Air India flight (AI188) traveling from Toronto to Delhi on Thursday morning, prompting heightened security measures midair. The flight, operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft, was reportedly about four hours away from Delhi when the threat was received at around 11:30 am, according to official sources.
The Delhi Police confirmed that they were alerted to the threat, following which the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport was convened. After an initial review, the committee determined that the threat was “non-specific.”
An Air India spokesperson confirmed that a security alert was indeed communicated during the flight’s cruise phase. “The on-board crew carried out all the laid-down security drills, keeping passenger safety and security as the top priority,” the airline said in a statement. The flight proceeded to Delhi without incident and landed safely at 3:40 pm.
Following standard security protocols, the aircraft was isolated for a mandatory inspection by airport security and bomb disposal units after landing. Air India confirmed that all passengers and crew members disembarked safely, and no suspicious objects were found.
The Toronto–Delhi flight, which usually takes around 15 hours, continued its journey uninterrupted after onboard checks showed no immediate threat. Authorities are now investigating the source of the message to determine whether it was a hoax or a genuine threat.
