British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan sharply rebuked Eric Trump after the US President’s son claimed that New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani “hates” the Indian community. Hasan mocked Eric Trump’s ignorance, pointing out that Mamdani himself is of Indian heritage.
Sharing the clip of Eric’s interview on X, Hasan wrote, “Zohran Mamdani is Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons.”
Eric Trump, speaking as Executive Vice-President of the Trump Organisation, had labelled Mamdani a “socialist communist” and accused him of hating both Indians and Jewish people. He also criticised Mamdani’s campaign remark that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York — a statement Mamdani framed in terms of international law.
Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democrat and son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, has not responded publicly to Eric Trump’s accusations. Political analysts say Eric’s comments reflect a broader effort to portray Mamdani as radical and out of step with New York’s priorities.
This is not the first time the Trump family has targeted Mamdani. Earlier this year, Donald Trump questioned his citizenship and threatened deportation if he obstructed ICE operations. Mamdani dismissed those remarks as political intimidation, emphasising that New York “believes in international law” and he would not be deterred.
Mehdi Hasan — whose own parents migrated from Hyderabad — reminded Eric Trump that attacking Mamdani’s ties to India makes little sense when Mamdani himself is Indian, turning the controversy into yet another critique of the Trump family’s political rhetoric.
