Ajay Singhal, an IPS officer, was named Haryana's top police officer

Senior Indian Police Service officer Ajay Singhal was on Wednesday appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana. A 1992-batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, Singhal succeeds the outgoing DGP who retired from service the same day. The appointment was cleared by the state government following recommendations from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

An official order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Misra stated that the Governor of Haryana had approved Singhal’s appointment for a minimum tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge. The decision was taken after the UPSC forwarded a panel of three officers — Shatrujeet Kapur (1990 batch), Ajay Singhal (1992 batch) and Alok Mittal (1993 batch) — for the post.

Before his elevation, Singhal was serving as the Director General of the Haryana State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. Over the course of his career, he has held several key positions, including Superintendent of Police, Inspector General of Police, Additional Director General of Police and Director General of Police. He has also served in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence under the Government of India.

After assuming charge, Singhal expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for entrusting him with the responsibility. He said he would work with honesty and dedication to strengthen law and order, ensure public safety and make the police force more professional, sensitive and accountable.

The state government’s decision followed the UPSC’s empanelment process held earlier this week. The Haryana government had initially sent a list of five senior IPS officers to the commission, including Shatrujeet Kapur, Ajay Singhal, Alok Mittal, Sanjeev Kumar Jain and A S Chawla, for consideration.

Singhal had earlier been given additional charge of the DGP’s post on October 14 after Shatrujeet Kapur went on leave amid political controversy linked to the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. On December 14, Singhal was formally appointed officiating DGP after Kapur was relieved of the role.
