As New Year’s Eve approaches, authorities across several major Indian cities — including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad — have announced extensive traffic and security arrangements to ensure public safety during celebrations on December 31. With large crowds expected to gather at popular public spots and entertainment hubs, police departments have put in place road closures, traffic diversions, restricted zones and enhanced deployment of personnel to manage movement and prevent overcrowding.
The measures are aimed at maintaining law and order, easing congestion, and ensuring the safety of revellers through the night and into the early hours of January 1, 2026. City administrations have urged residents to cooperate with traffic police, follow advisories, and plan their travel in advance to avoid inconvenience.
In Delhi, the Traffic Police has issued a detailed advisory covering Connaught Place and surrounding areas, which are expected to see heavy footfall. The restrictions will remain in force from 7 pm on December 31 until celebrations conclude. Special parking arrangements, traffic diversions and movement controls have been put in place to manage the anticipated surge of visitors. Authorities have also implemented similar restrictions in South Delhi’s Saket area, where traffic movement will be regulated from December 31 through January 1. The advisory highlights specific routes where vehicular access will be restricted and urges commuters to follow signages and police instructions to avoid congestion.
Mumbai has rolled out extensive security measures, with more than 17,000 police personnel deployed across the city to maintain order during New Year festivities. Popular gathering spots such as Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Girgaon Chowpatty, Bandra Bandstand, Juhu and Versova beaches will see heightened security presence. Police have strengthened checking procedures and patrols to prevent any untoward incidents. To support public transportation during the celebrations, Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, will operate extended services from late night on December 31 until early morning on January 1, helping commuters return home safely after midnight.
In Bengaluru, traffic restrictions have been imposed in and around the central business district and nightlife hubs. The Adugodi and Bengaluru Traffic Police have announced that several key roads, including MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street, will be closed to vehicular movement from 8 pm to 2 am. Additional diversions have been planned in the Koramangala area, particularly around YD Mutt Road, starting from 5 pm on December 31. These measures are intended to manage heavy crowds and ensure pedestrian safety during peak celebration hours.
Chennai authorities have also released a comprehensive traffic advisory, anticipating large gatherings along Marina Beach and Elliot’s Beach. The Greater Chennai Traffic Police has warned of traffic diversions, special parking rules and strict enforcement against rash driving and illegal racing. Officials said the focus will be on preventing overcrowding, regulating vehicle flow and ensuring that emergency services can move freely in high-density areas.
In Kolkata, traffic regulations will be enforced throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. According to an official notification from the city police, movement of goods vehicles will be restricted wherever necessary to ease congestion. Traffic police will monitor key intersections and public areas closely to maintain smooth flow and ensure public safety during celebrations.
Hyderabad has also stepped up security arrangements, with police deployment planned at over 200 major junctions across the city. Special attention will be given to high-traffic zones such as Tank Bund, Necklace Road, NTR Marg, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta and Khairatabad. Authorities have announced that vehicular movement will be restricted on Tank Bund and surrounding roads from 11 pm on December 31 until 2 am on January 1. Traffic diversions and access controls will also be enforced around Hussain Sagar Lake to manage crowds and prevent accidents.
Across all cities, officials have appealed to the public to follow traffic advisories, avoid drunk driving, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. The coordinated efforts are aimed at ensuring that New Year celebrations remain safe, orderly and enjoyable for everyone.
