A disturbing case of murder, allegedly triggered by a prolonged rent dispute, has sent shockwaves through a high-end residential complex in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. A woman landlord was allegedly strangled to death by the tenant couple occupying her flat after she confronted them over unpaid rent. In an apparent attempt to conceal the crime, the accused reportedly placed her body inside a suitcase and hid it beneath a bed in their apartment.
The incident occurred at Aura Chimera society in Rajnagar Extension, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Nandgram police station. The victim has been identified as Deepshikha Sharma, the wife of Umesh Sharma, who also resides in Ghaziabad. The crime has left residents of the upscale housing complex shaken, as such violence is rare in the area.
According to police officials, Deepshikha Sharma owned multiple properties within the society, including the flat that had been rented out to Ajay Gupta and his wife, Aakriti Gupta. Investigators said the couple had allegedly failed to pay rent for the last five to six months. On December 17, Deepshikha reportedly went to the tenants’ flat in the evening to demand the outstanding rent, but she never returned home afterward.
When Deepshikha did not come back even late at night, concern began to grow. Her domestic help became suspicious and went to the tenants’ flat to check on her. Sensing something unusual, a search was conducted, during which her body was discovered stuffed inside a red suitcase and concealed under the bed, confirming fears of a serious crime.
Police officials said that CCTV footage from the housing society played a crucial role in raising suspicion against the tenant couple. The footage showed Deepshikha entering the flat in the evening, but there was no record of her exiting the apartment later. This, combined with other circumstantial evidence, pointed investigators toward the tenants as the prime suspects.
The accused allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the incident but were intercepted by alert residents of the society, who restrained them and immediately informed the police. Both Ajay Gupta and Aakriti Gupta were subsequently taken into custody for questioning.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, police are in the process of registering an FIR under relevant sections of the law. Further legal proceedings are underway as investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the murder.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Nandgram) Upasana Pandey stated that preliminary findings suggest the victim died due to strangulation. She added that the accused are currently being interrogated and that all aspects of the case, including motive and timeline, are being examined in detail to ensure a thorough investigation.
The brutal nature of the crime has caused widespread panic and disbelief among residents of the society and nearby areas, highlighting concerns over safety even in gated and well-to-do residential communities.
