Bangladesh’s opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Tuesday publicly thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending wishes of a quick recovery to BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who remains in a critical condition in Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital.
PM Modi, in a message on X, expressed concern over her deteriorating health and noted her long-standing contribution to Bangladesh’s public life. He also said that India stands ready to provide any assistance required.
The BNP acknowledged the message through its official account and said it “deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill,” especially at a time when Khaleda Zia’s condition has sharply declined.
Zia, Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, was admitted to the hospital on November 23 after a lung infection escalated and other complications affecting her heart and lungs worsened. She has since been moved to the Coronary Care Unit and placed on ventilation. According to BNP officials, she remains under constant monitoring by a team of doctors that includes foreign specialists.
BNP leaders say her condition has shown no improvement. Vice-Chairman Ahmed Aazam Khan stated that most medical options have been exhausted and urged the nation to pray for her recovery. Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir noted that medical teams from Bangladesh and abroad are working around the clock, while Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that her status remained unchanged as of Sunday.
Khaleda Zia has been dealing with multiple chronic illnesses for several years, including liver and kidney ailments, diabetes, arthritis and eye-related complications. She returned to Dhaka on May 6 after undergoing four months of medical treatment in London.
