A Bengaluru police inspector was apprehended in the Lokayukta bribery trap

In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Karnataka Lokayukta Police carried out a trap in Bengaluru on Wednesday and apprehended a police inspector on bribery charges. The officer, identified as Govindaraju and posted at KP Agrahara Police Station, was allegedly caught in the act of taking a bribe at the Chamarajpet CAR Grounds at about 4:30 pm.

The action followed a formal complaint by a builder, Mohammed Akbar, who accused the inspector of seeking illegal payments in return for providing favourable treatment in connection with a criminal matter. In his complaint, Akbar stated that the officer had initially demanded Rs 5 lakh. He further claimed that he had already paid Rs 1 lakh on January 24, 2026, near Sirsi Circle, and had been directed to deliver the remaining Rs 4 lakh on the day the trap was laid.

Akbar also alleged a pattern of earlier misconduct, claiming that the same inspector had extracted Rs 6 lakh from him in late 2025 over a different issue involving his associates. To strengthen his accusations, he provided the Lokayukta with a pen drive that reportedly contained audio clips of conversations in which the officer was heard making bribe demands.

After reviewing the complaint and the supporting material, Lokayukta officials registered a case against the inspector under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Authorities have begun a detailed probe to verify the allegations, examine the evidence, and determine the full extent of the alleged wrongdoing.
