On the 77th Republic Day, the Karnataka government moved to actively encourage the wearing of Khadi as a way to reconnect government service with the legacy of India’s freedom movement. Senior officials have been asked to advise their departments that officers and staff may choose to wear Khadi garments on the first Saturday of every month and during official functions, including national celebrations such as Independence Day and Republic Day.
According to state authorities, Khadi should be viewed as more than just a type of cloth, as it represents the country’s honour, heritage and pride. They feel that promoting its use can nurture greater respect for home-grown products, foster unity and patriotic feeling, strengthen a shared Indian identity and confidence, and encourage a stronger sense of social duty among government personnel.
Officials also highlighted the economic importance of Khadi, pointing out that its production supports the rural sector. They said the push for Khadi would aid large numbers of spinners and weavers whose livelihoods depend on it.
They further noted that many Khadi artisans are now incorporating contemporary designs and styles into their products. Khadi production, they emphasised, remains a key support for the rural economy, generating both direct and indirect employment for thousands of craftspeople across the state.
