A Sikh taxi driver is praised as a hero for racing a pregnant woman to the hospital during a snowstorm in Canada

A routine night shift in Canada’s Calgary turned into an unforgettable experience for Indian-origin Sikh cab driver Hardeep Singh Toor, who is now being widely praised for his quick thinking and courage. Battling a severe snowstorm, Toor rushed a pregnant woman in advanced labour to the hospital, only for her to give birth inside his taxi moments before they arrived. Recalling the incident later, he described it as the longest and most intense day of his life.

What began as a normal duty took an unexpected turn when Toor received an urgent call from his dispatcher late at night. The city was in the grip of harsh winter conditions, with heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and slippery roads. Despite the dangerous weather, he immediately responded to the request to transport a pregnant woman who needed urgent medical attention. When he arrived at the pickup location, he realized the seriousness of the situation as the woman was visibly in pain and struggling to walk, supported by her partner.

As he began the drive to the hospital, the weather worsened, with temperatures dropping to nearly minus 23 degrees Celsius. The icy roads made driving extremely difficult, and Toor briefly considered calling an ambulance. However, judging by the woman’s condition, he realized there was no time to waste. Trusting his instincts, he decided to drive her himself, believing it was the fastest way to get her medical help.

Speaking later to CTV News, Toor said the woman’s body language made it clear that she was about to deliver. The 30-minute journey to the Peter Lougheed Centre felt much longer under the circumstances. Inside the cab, the tension grew as the woman cried out in pain, while Toor carefully navigated through traffic and slippery roads, focused solely on reaching the hospital safely.

Just a few blocks away from the medical facility, as the hospital came into view, the situation reached a dramatic climax. The sounds from the back seat suddenly stopped, and Toor realized the baby had been born inside the taxi. Despite the shock of the moment, he did not stop the vehicle and continued driving straight to the hospital, knowing that immediate medical care was crucial for both the mother and the newborn.

Upon arrival, Toor rushed inside to alert hospital staff that a baby had just been delivered in his cab. Medical personnel quickly rushed out, took charge of the situation, and ensured that both the mother and the baby girl received proper care. Doctors later confirmed that both were healthy and doing well. The baby’s father, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed deep gratitude to Toor for his calm and decisive actions.

The incident quickly drew admiration on social media, where people praised Toor for his bravery and selflessness. Many users called him a hero, with comments thanking him for stepping up in such a critical moment. Retired Indian diplomat Amar Jit Singh also praised Toor, saying his actions reflected the true spirit of Sikh values and selfless service. He described the incident as a perfect example of “sewa bhaav,” or the spirit of service, which he said is deeply rooted in Sikh culture.

Reflecting on the experience, Toor said it was a moment he would never forget. He described it as both overwhelming and deeply rewarding, joking that it was the first time he had picked up two passengers and dropped off three. For him, the incident stands as one of the proudest moments of his life, a reminder that even an ordinary workday can turn into an extraordinary act of humanity.
