Pakistan approves Bangladesh Airlines' direct flights from Dhaka to Karachi

Pakistan’s civil aviation authorities have granted Bangladesh’s national carrier, Biman Airways, temporary approval to operate direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi, marking a notable step toward improving bilateral relations between the two countries. The approval has been issued on a trial basis and will remain valid until March 30. This development comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement following political changes in Bangladesh in August 2024, which have helped create momentum for closer cooperation between Islamabad and Dhaka.

The decision allows Biman Airways to begin direct operations between the two major cities after a long gap. Officials from both sides have been exploring the possibility of restoring direct air connectivity since last year, viewing it as an important measure to strengthen trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties. The move is also expected to make travel more convenient for business communities and families with cross-border connections, while opening new avenues for economic and cultural exchange.

According to a report published in Pakistan’s Jang newspaper, the approval has been granted by Pakistan’s civil aviation authorities and will be implemented under a closely monitored framework. The airline will operate under Pakistan Civil Aviation rules, and technical and operational details are currently being finalised. Officials indicated that flight schedules, operational procedures, and related logistics are expected to be confirmed within the coming week.

The report further noted that the decision reflects a coordinated effort between aviation authorities of both countries, with the temporary nature of the approval allowing both sides to assess demand, operational feasibility, and passenger response before moving toward a more permanent arrangement.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Md Hussain Khan, had signalled that talks on resuming direct air links were in their final stages. He had expressed optimism that an agreement would soon be concluded, highlighting that direct flights would significantly enhance economic cooperation as well as cultural and social interactions between the two nations.

The renewed aviation cooperation follows another important step taken in October, when Pakistan granted Bangladesh access to the Karachi port. This move was aimed at helping Dhaka expand its trade routes and strengthen its global supply chain. Pakistani media reported that the decision aligned with broader efforts to deepen economic engagement between the two countries.

Further momentum was seen during the ninth meeting of the Joint Economic Commission held in Dhaka—the first such meeting in nearly two decades. During the session, Pakistan offered expanded cooperation in shipping and logistics. The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez and Bangladesh’s Finance Adviser, underscoring a renewed commitment from both sides to rebuild economic ties and explore long-term partnerships.

Together, these developments signal a gradual thaw in relations and a shared interest in enhancing connectivity, trade, and diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Bangladesh after years of limited direct interaction.
