Jaish militants are thought to be holed up after an encounter in Kishtwar, J&K

An encounter erupted in the Singhpora area of Kishtwar after terrorists opened fire on a joint team of security forces during a cordon and search operation launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, officials said.

According to sources, security agencies had received credible information about the presence of armed militants in the area, following which a large-scale joint operation was initiated to track them down. As the troops moved in and tightened the cordon, they came under sudden fire from the hiding terrorists, forcing the forces to retaliate.

The exchange of gunfire marked the beginning of an encounter, which is still ongoing. Security personnel are methodically advancing while maintaining the cordon to prevent the militants from escaping the area.

Preliminary inputs suggest that two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped in the operation zone. Sources indicated that the militants are suspected to be associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammed, though official confirmation is awaited.

The situation remains tense as the operation continues, with additional reinforcements deployed to ensure the area is fully secured. Authorities said further details will be shared once the encounter concludes and the situation on the ground becomes clearer.
